about

In the course of preaching through 1st Corinthians, we took three Sundays in January of 2013 to look at Paul's words to the Corinthians regarding the Lord's Supper. In preparation for these Sundays, I put out a call to all our musicians to write some original songs for us to sing during communion (which we observe weekly), and I gave them some old communion hymn texts as a starting point. I got so many good songs back from them that we ended up singing these original communion songs all through the Spring of 2013. Some even wrote their own texts.

These are live recordings from our services, so hopefully they will give you an idea of what it sounds like in the room as we come to the table. At times, you may even hear the servers saying, "The Body of Christ, broken for you," and, "His blood, shed for your life."

Track Name: O Come to the Table
O come to the table of God’s grace.
Where his glory is on display
His body and blood, broken and shed.
So that we might be saved!

O come to the table of God’s grace.
All we sinners and traitors who’ve strayed
Come remember our glorious King.
Who dealt with our sin and our shame!

O come to the table of God’s grace.
All you self-proclaimed saints
Once you were burdened by Law and Rule
But now, from these we’ve been set free!

O come to the table of God’s grace
Come as one church, and proclaim:
Jesus our Lord and our King
All glory and praise to his name!

O come to the table of God’s grace.
Where his glory is on display
His body and blood, broken and shed.
So that we might be saved!
Track Name: Take, Eat, and Live
‘Twas on that night, when doomed to know
The eager rage of ev’ry foe,
That night in which he was betrayed,
The Savior of the world took bread

And, after thanks and glory giv’n
To him that rules in earth and heav’n,
That symbol of his flesh he broke,
And thus to all his foll’wers spoke:

“My broken body thus I give
For you, for all; take, eat, and live;
And oft the sacred rite renew,
That brings my wondrous love to view, for you.”

Then in his hands the cup he raised,
And God anew he thanked and praised;
While kindness in his bosom glowed,
And from his lips salvation flowed:

“My blood I thus pour forth, he cries,
To cleanse the soul in sin that lies;
In this the covenant is sealed,
And Heav’n’s eternal grace revealed.”

“With love to man this cup is fraught,
Let all partake the sacred draught;
Through latest ages let it pour,
In mem’ry of my dying hour.”
Track Name: Here, O My Lord, I See Thee Face to Face
Here, O my Lord, I see thee face to face;
Here would I touch and handle things unseen;
Here grasp with firmer hand eternal grace,
And all my weariness upon thee lean.

Here would I feed upon the bread of God,
Here drink with thee the royal wine of heaven;
Here would I lay aside each earthly load,
Here taste afresh the calm of sin forgiven.

This is the hour of banquet and of song;
This is the heavenly table spread for me;
Here let me feast, and feasting, still prolong
The hallowed hour of fellowship with thee.

I have no help but thine; nor do I need
Another arm save thine to lean upon;
It is enough, my Lord, enough indeed;
My strength is in thy might, thy might alone.

Mine is the sin, but thine the righteousness:
Mine is the guilt, but thine the cleansing blood;
Here is my robe, my refuge, and my peace:
Thy blood, thy righteousness, O Lord my God!

Feast after feast thus comes and passes by;
Yet, passing, points to the glad feast above,
Giving sweet foretaste of the festal joy,
The Lamb’s great bridal feast of bliss and love.
Track Name: The Fellowship of the Unseen
Not far from any one of us, O Lord,
But near and dear to us.
To thee we pay the love, the praise;
In heav’n and earth adored.

No love, O loving Lord, no love like thine!
Fuller, sweeter than all loves
That fill our hearts, or mold our wills–
Replenish us with love!

CHORUS:
Oh take our hands and clasp them close!
Oh speak to us, as we speak to thee!
We would not, though, from thy presence flee;
Give us thy fellowship, and commune with me.

Oh love us, bless us, bind us to thy side;
Make communion warm and sweet.
Here on earth, it’s cold, until we meet
Where all is glorified.

Oh take our hands and clasp them close!
Oh speak to us, as we speak to thee!
We would not, though, from thy presence flee;
Give us thy fellowship, and commune with me.

This hand I clasp; this well-known face I see.
How close the union that makes us all complete!
O human oneness, soul to soul!
No brokenness: you make us whole!
Track Name: Deep Are the Wounds
Deep are the wounds which sin hath made;
Where shall the sinner find a cure?
In vain, alas, is nature’s aid,
The work exceeds all nature’s power.

Sin, like a raging fever, reigns
With fatal strength in every part;
The dire contagion fills the veins,
And spreads its poison to the heart.

And can no sovereign balm be found?
And is no kind physician nigh,
To ease the pain and heal the wound,
Ere life and hope forever fly?

There is a Great Physician near,
Look up, O fainting soul, and live;
See, in his heavenly smiles appear
Such ease as nature cannot give!

See in the Savior’s dying blood
Life, health, and bliss abundant flow!
‘Tis only this dear sacred flood
Can cleanse the heart, and heal its woe.

Sin throws in vain its pointed dart,
For here a sovereign cure is found;
A cordial for a fainting heart,
A balm for every painful wound.
Track Name: The Feast and the Guests
How sweet and aweful is the place
With Christ within the doors
While everlasting love displays
The choicest of her stores

Why was I made to hear thy voice?
And enter while there’s room
When thousands make a wretched choice
And rather starve than come

CHORUS:
And while our hearts and all our songs
Join to admire the feast
Each of us cry with thankful tongues
Lord, why was I a guest?

‘Twas the same love that spread the feast
That sweetly forced us in
Else we had still refused to taste
And perished in our sin

Pity the nations, O our God
Constrain the earth to come
Send thy victorious word abroad
And bring the strangers home

We long to see thy churches full
That all the chosen race
May with one voice and heart and soul
Sing thy redeeming grace
Track Name: The Love that Passes Knowledge
The love of God has come to earth,
The love of God to sinful men;
The love that giveth life and light,
Through him who died and rose again.
This word of love to man he speaks;
Who shall that word of love unsay?
“As far as east is from the west,
So far I bear your sins away”

The peace of Heaven’s come to earth,
The peace of God to sinners here;
It shineth sweetly from the cross,
It takes from us each guilty fear.
This word of peace to man he speaks;
Who shall that word of peace unsay?
“As far as east is from the west,
So far I bear your sins away.”

O sons of sorrow and of sin,
Life from the God of Life receive!
He loveth not to see you die,
Oh! listen, and your souls shall live!
This word of life to man he speaks;
Who shall that word of life unsay?
“As far as east is from the west,
So far I bear your sins away.”

O children of the cross and crown,
Whose life is hid with Christ in God,
Sing ye each day the song of light,
The song of freedom through the blood.
‘Tis he who gives that song of light;
Who shall his words of grace unsay?
“As far as east is from the west,
So far I bear your sins away.”

O children of the festival,
To whom the crown and throne belong,
Sing at his table here on earth
The prelude of the endless song.
‘Tis he who biddeth us rejoice;
Who shall his words of grace unsay?
“As far as east is from the west,
So far I bear your sins away.”
Track Name: I Will Sing to My God and King
The nails that held the Righteous One to the tree
Are stronger than my sin and infidelity
In being bound, my God has set me free
To rest in grace eternally

CHORUS:
So I will sing to my God and King
Who rules his kingdom forevermore
And who binds the hearts of his children tight
With his love and might, as the heirs of Christ
To show his love is true, to show his love is true

The blood that flowed is stronger than the strongest tide,
Drawing me, against my dark and fruitless pride
It bears for me all security
And moves my heart to sing

The cry of the abandoned Son of God
Is one I’ll never have to yell
He bore for me all of my pain and suffering
To bring me clean before the throne
Track Name: The Feast
In memory of the Savior’s love,
we keep the sacred feast,
where every humble, contrite heart
is made a welcome guest.
By faith we take the bread of life
by which our souls are fed,
the cup in token of his blood
that was for sinners shed.

CHORUS:
Amazing love came down for us
And shed his blood,
That through him we’d have new life!

He left his crown, he left his throne,
By his great Father’s side,
He wore the thorn, he bore the cross,
Was scourged and crucified
We see thee at thy table, Lord,
By faith with great delight;
Oh how refined those joys will be
When faith is turned to sight.

And under his banner thus we sing the wonders of his love,
And thus anticipate by faith the heavenly feast above.
Track Name: Christ for Us
Lord, I believe; oh deal with me
As one who has thy word believed;
I take the gift, Lord look on me
As one who has thy gift received.

Here at thy feast, I grasp the pledge
Which life eternal to me seals,
Here in the bread and wine I read
The grace and peace thy death reveals.

CHORUS:
Jesus, O Son of God, I build
On what thy cross has done for me;
There both my death and life I read,
My guilt, my pardon there I see
There I see, oh now I see

I taste the love the gift contains,
I clasp the pardon which it brings,
And pass up to the living source
Above, whence all this fullness springs.

Not on merit of my own, not on doings which I have done
Not on a life I have lived, not victory over death I won
Not on sorrows which I have known, not on tears which I have cried
No it wasn’t my perfect life, no it wasn’t me who was crucified
Another’s life, another’s death,
On Christ I stand, on Christ alone I rest,

Jesus alone sets me free, from everything
Track Name: On the Cross You Hung
Let us praise the risen Lord
While at his feast we sit
His body broken, blood outpoured
Oh God, our guilt acquit

Empty-handed, lost, ignored
All our works unfit
Jesus gave us his reward
Declared us as his kin

CHORUS:
“Why, oh Lord, are we so blessed,”
we cry with thankful tongues,
“that we should find a sabbath rest
since on the cross you hung.”

What strange surprising grace is this
That welcomes sinners nigh
As far as east is from the west
Our sins are cast aside

In memory of the Savior’s love
We take the bread of life
The cup, a token of his blood
That washed and sanctifies
Track Name: The Supper of Thankgiving
For the bread and for the wine, for the pledge that seals him mine,
For the words of love Divine, we give thee thanks, O Lord.

For the body and the blood, for the more than angels’ food,
For the boundless grace of God, we give thee thanks, O Lord.

Only bread and only wine, yet to faith the solemn sign
Of the heavenly and Divine, we give thee thanks, O Lord.

For the words that turn our eyes to the Cross of Calvary,
Bidding us in faith draw nigh, we give thee thanks, O Lord.

For the words that fragrance breathe,
These poor symbols underneath;
Words that his own peace bequeath, we give thee thanks, O Lord.

Only bread and only wine, yet to faith the solemn sign
Of the heavenly and Divine, we give thee thanks, O Lord.

For the words that tell of home, pointing us beyond the tomb,
“Do ye this until I come,” we give thee thanks, O Lord.

For that coming, here foreshown, for that day to man unknown,
For the glory and the throne, we give Thee thanks, O Lord.

Only bread and only wine, yet to faith the solemn sign
Of the heavenly and Divine, we give thee thanks, O Lord.
Track Name: Who Shall Separate Us?
Let the sunshine quit my sky;
Let the sharp east wind assail;
Let the fightings from without,
And the fears within prevail.

CHORUS:
Only, only, only call me thine,
Only, only let me call thee mine,
And all shall be well.
All shall be well.

Let dark disappointment come,
Let affection’s cherished dreams
Vanish like the bloom of spring,
Like the rainbow’s passing gleams.

Let the broken bonds of love
Leave a void within my breast;
Let the farewells of each day
Remind me this is not my rest.

Let my last farewell be said;
Let the shroud enwrap my clay;
Let this mortal body pass
Into nothingness away.
Track Name: Tell Me the Story of Jesus
Tell me the story of Jesus,
Write on my heart every word;
Tell me the story most precious,
Sweetest that ever was heard.
Tell how the angels, in chorus,
Sang as they welcomed his birth,
“Glory to God in the highest!
Peace and good tidings to earth.”

CHORUS:
Tell me the story of Jesus,
Write on my heart ev’ry word;
Tell me the story most precious,
Sweetest that ever was heard.

Fasting alone in the desert,
Tell of the days that are past,
How for our sins he was tempted,
Yet was triumphant at last.
Tell of the years of his labor,
Tell of the sorrow he bore,
He was despised and afflicted,
Homeless, rejected and poor.

Tell of the cross where they nailed him,
Writhing in anguish and pain;
Tell of the grave where they laid him,
Tell how he liveth again.
Love in that story so tender,
Clearer than ever I see:
Stay, let me weep while you whisper,
Love paid the ransom for me.
Track Name: Beneath His Wing (bonus track)
I come, I rest beneath the shadow of thy wing
That I may know how good it is
There to abide—how safe its sheltering!

I lean upon the cross, when fainting by the way.
It bears my weight, it holds me up,
It cheers my soul, it turns my night to day.

CHORUS:
I rest in thee, I rest in thee,
My Savior and my God, I rest in thee.

I clasp the outstretched hand of my deliv’ring Lord;
Unto his arm I link myself,
His arm Divine—It does me help afford.

I hear the gracious words he speaketh to my soul;
They whisper rest, they banish fear,
They say, “be strong.” They make my spirit whole.

At his own table here, I sit and hear his voice.
That bread and wine, they speak to me,
Of love Divine; I listen and rejoice!
Track Name: Psalm 25 (bonus track)
To you, O Lord, I lift my soul
Lead me in your truth
Teach me your ways, oh God of my salvation
Good and upright is the Lord
He instructs us sinners in his ways

To you, O Lord, I lift my soul
God, in you I trust
Remember your mercy, oh Lord
Remember your steadfast love
For the sake of your goodness, oh Lord

Turn to me, and be gracious,
For I am lonely and afflicted
Bring me out of my distress
Consider my affliction, and forgive my sins

To you, O Lord, I lift my soul
For your name’s sake, O Lord
Oh, guard my soul, and deliver me
Let me not be put to shame, for I take my refuge in you
Let me not be put to shame, for I take my refuge in you
